2.3 Authentic Learning
Candidates model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to engage students in authentic learning experiences. (PSC 2.3/ISTE 2c)
Artifact: ITEC 7400 Engaged Learning Project
The artifact I am using to model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to engage students in authentic learning experiences, is the engaged learning project I designed in ITEC 7400. The purpose of this assignment is to encourage students to develop a position in regards to social justice. Students are free to use any technology to develop a creative work that answers the question, how does Martin Luther King’s dream unify us? Their presentation and delivery is collaborative in nature.
This artifact supports the modeling and facilitation of the use of digital tools and resources indefinitely. Students decide on how they will develop a response to how Martin Luther King’s speech unifies us as a nation. The options are a speech recording on YouTube, a brochure or presentation. The sky is the limit in what technology tools they use. This decision includes the digital tool and delivery. The project is highly collaborative and encourages digital tools at all stages of facilitation. The project reflects a collective feedback from peers and teacher, as well as a supportive classroom model to promote creativity in the design and delivery. This experience is authentic because it promotes student creativity and decision. Students deliver a genuine response to why unity is important for our society. Parents and Clare County representative participate and enter the classroom during the duration of this project. This provides an authentic audience and learning support through a culture of feedback and collaboration among students using various digital tools of choice.
After completing this artifact, there was a major focus on parent involvement. This strategy to support students in their learning environment is powerful. Student engagement is high and they feel supported as they answer this important question about social justice. It involves an enormous amount of creativity and constructive feedback to support the learner’s appropriately.
School improvement and faculty development develops and promotes authentic learning tasks with lessons such as this one. The more this process occurs in schools the easier it becomes for each planned lesson and activity. Authentic learning tasks are happening and can continue to be a part of school improvement, faculty development and focus and most importantly the emphasis on community involvement to promote authentic learning experiences for students.
