Candidates model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness (PSC 4.3/ISTE 5c)
Artifact: ITEC 7400 Engaged Learning Project
The artifact I am using to model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding and increase global awareness is the engaged learning project I designed in ITEC 7400. The purpose of this artifact is to engage students to develop a position in regards to social justice collectively. Students are free to use any technology to develop a creative work. Their presentation and delivery is collaborative in nature due to the intentional structure of a collaborative learning environment that answers the question, how does Martin Luther King’s dream unify us?
This artifact models and facilitates the use of diverse tools to support diverse learning needs, cultural understandings and increases global awareness by enabling students to make choices and take risks by exploring social justice through collaborative means. Student’s diverse learning needs highlight this projects flexibility in research tools and content, technology presentation development and student pairings and grouping of choice. As students work together with their peers, parents and outside community resources, they develop their own interpretation of freedom. This project provides students the opportunity to explore how Dr. King’s speech still unifies our nation. Each student has a diverse perspective. As students take on this question collaboratively, they make numerous decisions. How will we find information? Who will help us? What will our group look like? Who is going to tackle what? In this process, students develop an understanding of how research, team dynamics, roles, and responsibilities is its own cultural understanding. We are a team and we must be able to work collaboratively towards a common goal. This is the ultimate practice in real life cultural understanding. Finally, during the duration of this project, the development of projects become a community presentation. Clarke County shares that student’s work with the community of parents and teachers. Winners receive verbal announcements and recognition. This may seem only community based, but when students take on this power question, it becomes the world’s story. Global awareness highlights the importance of this significant question. How does Dr. King’s speech unify us?
The work that went into developing this project provides a basis and framework for student centered inquiry and real life application. The involvement of parents and community members enables students to take on this task in a meaningful way. Structuring lessons around topics such as social justice highlights the importance of global awareness and knowledge of the world. New discoveries and the flexibility in presentations ensure all learners have the opportunity to excel.
As I share the success of this activity with my team, faculty development occurs when teachers discuss the strengths and weaknesses of any given lesson or unit. School improvement occurs when the county aligns all schools. His can be curriculum, professional development and student activities such as this one. If Clarke County School District continues to develop this opportunity, schools can engage their learners and provide lessons that promote discussions and dialogue to support diverse students, cultural understanding and global awareness for all students in the district. Now, that is powerful!
