Artifact: ITEC 7400 Engaged Learning Project
The artifact I am using to model and facilitate effective classroom management and collaborative learning strategies to maximize teacher and student use of digital tools and resources is the engaged learning project I designed in ITEC 7400. The purpose of this artifact is to engage students to develop a position in regards to social justice collectively. Students are free to use any technology to develop a creative work. Their presentation and delivery is collaborative in nature due to the intentional structure of a collaborative learning environment that answers the question, how does Martin Luther King’s dream unify us?
This artifact supports the modeling and facilitation of a collaborative learning environment with providing students a choice in digital tool selection and flexible groupings to promote an engaging classroom management. Friends, family and parents may attend the project sessions to encourage dialogue and collective thought about the social justice phenomenon]. As stated, the project poses a powerful question to students; how does Martin Luther King’s dream unify us? Students work collectively to design, plan and engage in the learning process to participate in the Clarke County School District’s Writing and Art Challenge. The students work together to create creative works. These products will vary drastically based on digital tool choice, collaborative plans and presentation style. All students are encouraged to work with one another to support peer interactions and reasoning skills among groups. The teacher serves as a model for peer collaboration and facilitates learning by meeting with groups and individuals, as the projects develop. Students are also free to join other groups and work with all students in the class. This encourages students to learn one another’s position and stance on this important topic, influencing a compassionate appreciation for various opinions and values. Collaborative learning and research is key in producing a well thought out and balanced presentation. The classroom management system includes flexible grouping, parent involvement, collaboration and choice.
After completing this artifact, my outlook on flexible grouping has changed immensely. Students adored being able to learn from their peers and have the flexibility to work the room. This structure encouraged lots of dialogue, planning, collective research, reasoning skills and student involvement. I wish to utilize this classroom management style to encourage collaboration on various projects in the future.
The work that went into creating and sharing this project with my grade level team encourages more meaningful tasks that take content and technology standards into consideration. As teams share various strategies and management styles that are successful, these strategies become prevalent across the grade level. The modeling and facilitation of various classroom management strategies and collaborative leaning environments encourages others to try to sample this structure in their own rooms, especially when a strategy is successful.
