This course has been very unique in my experience as an Instructional Technology major. Before I began researching, I was under the impression that personalized learning (PL) was solely the use of technology for instructional purposes. I also thought that PL required choice and completing work at your own pace. HERE is a link to my initial thoughts on Personalized Learning. After research I understand that PL is so much more than using technology in the classroom, choice and student paced completion of assignments.
First, I demonstrated mastery in my knowledge of PL by researching the topic and modeling my understanding through a Google Slideshow with embedded videos. Upon completion of this assignment, I had a good understanding of what PL really was. I compared and contrasted various view points and then summarized these ideas to come up with my own definition. HERE is a link to my Visions Comparison Assignment for PL. To summarize, PL involves but it not limited to learner voice, flexible content, strategic assessments and reflection, collaboration, individual goal setting and authentic tasks. Personalized Learning prepares students to be successful and move forward in their learning journey.
PL is strategically implementing Web tools that engage learners. For my second assignment, I completed a website that described various PL tools for students to demonstrate their learning. I focused on a few of my favorite tools, Google Tour Builder, StoryBird, IXL, XtraMath and Padlet. HERE is a link to mt Technology Tools in the Classroom Website. In this artifact, I not only explained how to use the tools but the strengths and weakness of each tool. This provided a very clear understanding of these resources and how they can benefit students in the classroom.
The third assignment was to explore Mastery Philosophy in Teaching. This was a challenging task to say the least. It took a lot of research to determine how I was going to go about explaining this philosophy. I decided to focus on people and their thoughts and then take what I had learned to summarize my own thoughts on the topic. HERE is a link to my Mastery Philosophy Website that explore various definitions for Mastery Learning. I found that Kyle Spencer, Sydney Schaef, Thomas R, Guskey, Vahid Montamedi, and Gentile and Lalley had some great ideas about Matsrey Philosophy. In summary, some of the strategies used for Mastery Philosophy are clear measurable goals for students, flexible groups that focus on remediation, on grade level and extension activities, collaboration, routine assessments that align with standards, and individual feedback to students. Students will master material, but it will be in their own time.
Finally, after mastering all these skills and understandings, I was able to create my own plan for PL for my scope of influence. HERE is a link to this plan. I have included the most important essential conditions of PL, environment, weekly plan, collaboration, individual goals and a evaluation from my mentor. I plan to address these specific areas and have designed a timeline for this plan to be conducted. My mentor will evaluate and provide feedback on this design in November.
I had adored these activities and especially being able to show mastery in a way that makes sense to me. Imagine a classroom room where students feel this excitement too. That's the goal! Personalized Learning is just that. PL is a way to get students engaged and excited about the learning process, a way for them to feel successful and more importantly a way for them to feel responsible and accountable for their own learning.
